Church chairs in the UK

And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous. And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.“

Judg 18, 5, 6

There are a number of impressive sacral buildings in England, telling the history of the country and the faith of its inhabitants. For example, the huge St Paul’s Cathedral in London, inspired by the St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the majestic Norman-style Durham Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world in York (York Minster) or the modern Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool.

These and many other cathedrals and basilicas are a frequent destination for pilgrims and tourists. At the same time, they serve as a place of worship for Englishmen and immigrants from all over the world. There are an estimated 200,000 of them from Slovakia.

Slovaks usually move abroad for economic reasons and out of a desire to try life somewhere else. During the long years of immigration, a large community of Christians has been built in England to help them integrate with society and survive difficult times in a foreign country. And thus, they sit on church pews under the vaults of English cathedrals and seek peace of mind in prayer.

Church pews in the UK

Not all cathedrals managed to preserve the original church seating. Hundreds of years of service to believers, environmental influences, pests and sometimes devastating fires have caused the gradual extinction of carpentry and carving works of art.

In England, they take care of their majestic cathedrals, for example, with the help of professional restorers. However, sometimes a complete replacement of seating equipment cannot be avoided.
